Considering Small Fry BU

Postby Indianrock » Fri Feb 26, 2010 3:46 pm

I play mostly in church but do have some use for a smooth overdrive in my second PA channel. I'd like to improve upon the OD-3 and wondered if the Small Fry BU might be a good choice where you primarily want a nice smooth crunch or OD when playing rhythm.

The Liverpool supposedly emulates an AC-30 and will overdrive but it's normally set clean. At best I might be able to stomp on one pedal between songs, other than that I have to keep the "train" rolling.

The Small fry makes a wonderful smooth OD. It sits in the mix non offensively. I use it for power chords, yet it articulates the full chord. Allowing for complex chords to come through cleanly with OD. IMO, the SF needs a good speaker set up. It's very impressive through deep-toned cab(s).

As you can see in my signature, I'm running direct. Our wedge monitors are pretty good and the house speakers slightly above average I'd say. I'm going to try using my looper pedal so I can walk around the room and listen to my rig running. As far as the sound I'm after, the lead singer in the clip below has great rhythm tone -- via a Matchless amp I believe. So something close to that is what I'm after -- without spending $2000 I have very very few opportunities for leads/fills so it's good crunchy rhythm tone that's needed.

To tell you the truth, going direct is not my expertise. What I do know is Barber pedals are better than Boss. I did own an OD-3 once upon a time. Probably their best, but still had that brittle, fizzy high end. If your currently pulling it off with a Boss, no doubt a Barber will do the job better.

Placed my order for a small fry. It looks like it will occupy less space than the standard Boss pedal. How much does it weigh? The Boss OD-3 it will replace weights 15 ounces.
