I wonder if this is the so called intermodulation distortion...

The more notes you play at a time, the more output. You are most likely hearing more distortion due to the increased output.

sure but it doesn't explain why the harmonics decay more abruptly in the middle and right position of the toggle switch.
not sure if this is the right way to explain it.... it sounds like the distorted sound (or the harsh part of it) ends abruptly and the mellow or cleaner part rings out fine

is this what assymetric distortion is?

although I've noticed this behaviour in a more extreme fashion on a Fulltone 70, a BOSS BD-2 and a Marshall Drivemaster and those to my knowledge all use symmetrical clipping... so I guess there goes my theory...

it's just funny that this only happens in the middle and right position of the toggle switch (and only when the dynamics knob is not fully ccw - and those settings are asymmetric if I read the manual correctly)

the left position is fine... (as in it doesn't happen there - even when the dynamics knob is turned fully cw)

what I really wanted to say is though - that it would be interesting to know if the fizz the OP is experiencing goes away when the toggle is in the left position

I'm sure the OP will comment when he gets back.

The toggle selection you mentioned are asymmetric, but they are also higher output (center lower gain/distortion). Light ribbed cone speakers with 1" voice coils can have exaggerated treble fidelity at lower volumes until you crank them and they become less efficient at producing highs, un-doped can make things even a little more "excited". When you are listening to the center and right selections on the toggle, are their any other effect pedals plugged in? Is your amp set perfectly clean? We have been making the Burn Unit/SF for about 13 years, I have not heard reports in the past that the center and right are fizzy...without being in the room with your rig, I would guess the extra output could be a factor, but I'm not in the room. Clip??

here's the clip

http://www.leftoverlasagne.com/geheim/B ... allFry.mp3

signal chain for this clip is:

guitar -> tc flashback (set to looper to have the same sound with each toggle position) -> small fry -> empress para EQ -> Emery Sound Micro Baby -> Cab with two Jensen C12R speakers

if you listen to this clip you'll notice that especially in the middle position the harmonic content is slighty more fizzy... and ends more abruptly.... (don't know if I'm explaining that correctly)

I'm pretty sure though that this is due to the low volume I'm playing at...
but I thought it was funny that the toggle to the left doesn't show this behaviour at all no mater where the dynamics knob is set.

The left toggle is lower in output which is expected, the center is loudest and right is second loudest, all acting as expected. I'm guessing the dynamics control was not set all the way down? The guitar's tuning is a little off that that will always add to the ugliness of the OD. The clean guitar sound was lower in volume than the OD sounds. I would imagine some harmonics could be added by the amp's front end on the louder settings of the SF (middle, right). The right setting sounded like you chose a more asymmetric setting on the dynamics control. I can't comment on any color from the other effects that are plugged in unless I hear the chain with them removed (not switched off). Nothing sounds defective, nor strongly fizzy.

I should ask, have you tried the Small Fry into an amp that can produce over 1-2 watts?

nope.... haven't done that.... will try once I have access to one though.
