tone press for hard rock/metal?

I just bought this saturday got it in a trade in. I play mainley high gain vanhalen type rock, the tone press enhances it some good and bad. I put it in front of my fx loop and tried in the middle wich seems best, also played with the color tone pot it seems best in the middle or so. Any other Ideas? its probley best for cleans i know but some say its good for distortion also.
