Burn Unit 3rd stage?

Postby ScottNaylor » Sat Sep 27, 2014 11:10 pm

Been using a Burn Unit EQ for a while now as my primary gain, and love it. Missing a 3rd stage, though.

Not opposed to stacking, but have not had much luck stacking other drives on the BUEQ to get what I want. Would love to find an overdrive/distortion that sounds similar to the BUEQ, but, you know, bigger, more drive, slightly more compressed.

Don't have access to a ton of Barber gear w/o buying, so curious as to what y'all recommend for a 3rd gain stage after a BUEQ.

Thanks!

Specifically... would switching to a Dirty Bomb for high gain from the BUEQ sound so different as to not make sense?
Or would something like a Gain Changer or DD stack well to give a 3rd stage?

Love the BUEQ, just wanna figure out how to get a similar sounding 3rd gain stage.

The DB is a different sound than the BUEQ, it has a rougher presentation, more rock. You might try adding something before the BUEQ to push it a little, but be careful of noise as you stack gain pedals.

Thanks, David. Anything in your line you'd recommend?

#1 is an Alder Strat with DiMarzio Areas (58/61/Virtual Solo)
#2 (backup) is an Swamp Ash G&L Legacy with Alnico Vs and a Duncan HB (PAF voiced).

I build the setup around the Strat.

Have you ever tried putting a compressor before the BU? You are going to amplify noise when you keep adding stages, but if you are careful to turn off any pedal that's "pushing" the BU when quiet sections come up then you will be fine. I used a compressor often to push my amp when i was gigging, a Tone Pres woud work well to add that "3rd stage".

Yeah - already running one before any drives, but have always used it as an 'always on' sort of thing.
Will give that a shot and set it up to use the way you're describing. Might be perfect; I just never thought to try it that way.

Thanks!!
