Direct Drive noise questions

Discuss standard production effect pedals

I hope David doesn't mind that this thread is going further and further away from Barber pedals :p

pvictory:

I had the same problem as you sometime back, and settled for Texas Specials in the neck and middle positions, and a Seymour Duncan Lil '59 in the bridge position. Check out the offerings from Duncan, Dimarzio and the like, or companies like BG Pickups, WCR, Highorder etc. if you want to go boutique. Read some reviews, listen to audio clips, watch some demos on YouTube, and you should be all set.

Yikes. Caleb makes a great point. This thread has gone far beyond the bounds of what is reasonable for a question about a Barber pedal.

Let me just say thanks to all who helped, and maybe I'll post a question about all this under a different heading. (I will try to pick a more accurate thread title if I make one this time, as this thread was not appropriately named--should have been "single coil noise questions". My bad. ) I don't want to be the obnoxious new guy who suddenly thinks the whole forum is about figuring his tone problems out. Thanks to all who helped on this.

By the way, in final analysis, for anyone reading these posts for info on the Direct Drive, the pedal sounds outstanding. I'm certainly glad I got it and I definitely plan to buy more Barber pedals as soon as I replace my pickups and save up a little extra cash again. Thanks all.

Ok, one last post on this thread, which is a picture of the offending pickups, as requested by Mr. Barber in his previous post. Here they are in all their definitely-not-Lace-Sensor ignominy. Any guesses? (Sorry they are HUGE in the preview, but I'm too computer clumsy to figure out how to shrink them. Ugh.

Those pickups do look like they could be stock, but maybe we would need to look inside th pickgaurd to be sure. :)

Feel free to chat beyond the idea of Barber products, this is first and foremost a "players forum", as long as we are not dragging barber products through the mud, then everything is fine.

Thanks for updating your sig, the sound clip I was hoping for was of you or your music (I think that is what we got!)...this helps everybody have a better idea about giving and getting proper advice. As far as I know, the idea of a "players forum" does not exist on the Internet, where everybody needs to have an equipment sig and sound file link...simple but FINALLY actually effective web communication! :D

David,

Thanks again. I have to say I am impressed by everything Barber, including this forum. It is a fantastic idea to have a players forum with links to their music, because so often you get advice from someone without any idea what they are about and vice versa. To be honest, I'm not even sure if I can accurately describe the tone I'm going for, and all those tone words are so subjective. I mean, what's brittle to me might be creamy to another guy. Anyway, I think I'm being captain obvious here.

As to the pickups, I've never removed my pickguard before (surprise, surprise) and am not sure I'm up to it without ample time and some sort of anti-anxiety concoction... so maybe I'll wait to post that pic (besides, who needs any more godzilla-sized pictures of my corroded pickups) until I have a better opportunity. I got the guitar in 91 from a guy who wasn't really a player, so I doubt that he customized it in anyway.

I've looked into most of the pickups discussed or suggested by the folks in this forum and it looks like I can't go wrong with any of them. Now its just a matter or finding what is most right for my style, ear, etc.
