Less drive on an old SS

Postby chrisq206 » Wed Dec 29, 2010 9:52 pm

This is my first post. I have an older SS which sounds great, but has too much drive for my tastes. I run the drive at almost 0 and it's still quite distorted. I'd like to have the lower range of the drive pot to be more versatile, without losing output volume.

Also, I've posted some of my gear, but if someone could tell me how to post a sound sample, it would help me get into compliance w/ the rules.

Cheers,

Chris

I have a ton of other stuff. This is what I used most in my last group. I recently picked up a older Tone Pump #126 and an Older SS.

Does the Tone Pump have more gain than needed? We just had a thread about 10 days ago with nearly the same question, you might try the 220k across the drive pot's outside legs.

You can post sound files to soundclick or youTube and then post the link, those sites work well for streaming media.

The Tone Pump works well, especially w/ the two gain settings, but doesn't have the overal output of the SS. I like to hit my amps pretty hard a dial in a little diode dist as needed. The SS seems to have more overall output, and the dist sounds great, it would just be a lot more useful to me if the pedal would clean up in the lower end of the drive control. Will the 220k lower the output of the pedal? Will it make it sound more like an Ltd (not that I've played one yet)?

I don't want to mess w/ the TP, it seems to do its job pretty well. It's an early one that you Sharpied all over the component values on. Kind of an artifact really. Plus I think the SS w/ your design improvements has a little more potential.

I'll try and get a sound sample up soon. I'm not real savy w/ that kind of thing.

Thank you for your help

Chris

The 220K will just lower the gain range of the pot, it will not sound like an LTD. The output will remain the same.

Thanks, Nice choice on the Hamer I've had Hamer fever over the last few years. Have you tried the Newport Pro I have one, very nice.

Can you describe the differences in the Ltd, or do I just have to go buy one and see?
