Help--half gainer fizzing

Postby veryzer » Fri Apr 15, 2011 7:57 pm

I just got a half gainer yesterday and plugged it in. It sounds great except for a fizzy sound I get on the pick attack. It's more pronounced on the lower strings, especially with the mids getting higher. Anyone know of any way I can tweak this so it'll work with my PRRI? I'd really hate to get rid of it, especially without seeing what it can really do.

BTW, I have a tone pump and a dirty bomb that aren't having this problem.

Did the dealer you purchased from give you any input on the "fizz"?

And most importantly, let's get to know each-other better first. :D

Oops, sorry.

First of all, I'm an incompetent player with a kid, which means I play in the basement for my pleasure and my neighbors' displeasure. I bought my first ever pedal 6 months ago. It was a tone pump purchased directly from Dave and it's the best money I ever spent. It makes my PRRI sound absolutely huge in my little room. I can't imagine a better pedal, though I decided I wanted something to both offer lower gain and boost the tp to stratospheric levels. Enter the half gainer. I found a good price on a used one on tgp (I apologize if that makes a posting on this site in bad taste. I actually asked on tgp if this would be kosher and people basically said Dave would be only too happy to help) and immediately jumped on it....after all, everyone and their mother has been lauding this thing. Like I said in the initial post, the sound is tasty--fat and smooth, but I'm getting this goddamned dirty, farty speaker-type breakup on the attack. My two other Barber pedals continue to make sweet love to my PRRI, but the hg is having an issue...I don't get it. The fella I bought it from said he used it as his go-to od for over six months without a problem and I'd love to trust him. Triviani over at tgp said he had the same issue with one of his amps, though he failed to respond when asked which amp was the culprit. Please help me complete my Barber dirt board!!!!!!!!!

I think I failed... :( I was trying to ask for an equipment sig to be posted as per our rules of the forum, it really helps us sort out things like "fizz" when we know what equipment is being used. Here is the link.

No, you didn't fail...I'm pretty sure it was me that failed. Well, that and the vodka. Anyway, I have the equipment sig up now, though I don't have any sound clips.

Thanks for the update, that helps! I would have normally thought the 10" ribbed speaker was the problem but I think Tone Tubby speakers are straight cone? Do you hear the fizz with the midrange control half way up? Or more when you dial it full counter clockwise?

Right, it's not ribbed. It seems to be more evident with the midrange up more, rather than full ccw.

Hmm, I'm nearly stumped, I don't know the sound of the speaker, and often "fizz" is brought out by speakers with small voice coils with un-doped cone, or bright caps on amps volume controls. Sometimes over-driving another solid state device will cause "fizz". Is the Half Gainer the only device plugged in? Battery or power supply? Have you tried another speaker cab or amp?

It's on a furman power board with the other pedals in the sig. I took it out of the chain and plugged it in solo with the same results. I'm going to try it with a friend's amp in the near future. I'll report back with results. I appreciate the help.

Well, I plugged it in to my friend's ac15 today and it had zero issues, so I guess I'll have to sell it. At least I still have Senor Smoke (tone pump) to get overdrive tones. I really do appreciate your help on this, Dave. Your reputation is well-earned.
