Barber Electronics Midnight Standard — $169.95 USD
The Barber Midnight Standard brings updated textures, a wider gain range, and greater flexibility to one of the most loved overdrive circuits ever made.
The original Bluesbreaker circuit is a classic, but we felt it could favor lower-output single coils more than humbuckers and P-90s as the gain came up. The Midnight Standard addresses that with a wider-range Gain control and a 3-way Compression toggle designed to keep the sound cohesive across different pickup outputs and gain settings.
The redesigned Gain control moves easily from open, articulate low gain into thicker textures with more sustain and harmonic content, while retaining remarkable sensitivity to changes in your picking and fretting hands. The Tone control has also been opened up slightly, adding more sweetness and chime at the top while still allowing thicker, throatier sounds.
The original two-stage overdrive architecture remains intact. Rather than adding active bass or output stages, we stayed with the simple signal path that gives this style of circuit its detail and immediacy.
A 3-way Body toggle expands the frequency response even further. Stock retains the classic tight response. Deep adds greater low-end authority and weight. Thick adds a pronounced low-mid bark with a distinctly British character.
The Compression toggle offers three different ways to shape the clipping response. Stock preserves the wide dynamics of the original circuit. Push adds a more connected, refined feel that works especially well with medium-output pickups. Toasty brings the sound together at higher gain settings and with hotter pickups, avoiding the disconnected clean-plus-fuzz quality that some classic Bluesbreaker circuits can develop when pushed hard.
The result is a Bluesbreaker-style overdrive that can stand confidently on its own, from low gain through richer medium and higher-gain settings, with single coils, P-90s, Filter’Trons, Dynasonics, and humbuckers.
Like all Barber pedals, the Midnight Standard is hand-built and hand-soldered. Chassis-mounted controls, jacks, and footswitch are connected with solid-conductor flying leads rather than being mounted directly to the PCB.
